Our Ministries
Vision
The work of Jericho Ministries is to evangelize, disciple, and equip persons who have been involved in prostitution, that they might be transformed by the power of Jesus Christ from marginalized individuals into productive members of society, working with dignity and integrity to rescue others involved in prostitution in their community, country and to the ends of the earth.
Street Ministry
Jericho Ministries continues to make visits to the streets to share the love of Christ with women trapped in prostitution. Often small gifts that the rescued women make by hand are given out to show God's love in a tangible way. Special events are also a part of the street ministry which include ministry to the women and their children through dramas, evangelistic outreaches, special meals, medical brigades, visits to the women's homes, and Vacation Bible School.
Jericho Workshop
The purpose of the workshop is four-fold:
- Offer a practical skill that generates income so that the women don't have to be on the streets
- Help them grow in their love of Christ and their obedience to Him
- Help them learn to work and cooperate with others in an atmosphere of acceptance and love
- Encourage them to walk in truth of the value and worth they have in Christ
To fulfill these purposes, the greatest emphasis is placed on the women having an ongoing abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. Thus formal and informal discipleship through worship, Bible Study, and counseling is a vital part of each day. He is ultimately the One who keeps the women from returning to the streets. Their testimonies are powerful and they are encouraged in their desire to proclaim freedom to their former colleagues still trapped in the prostitution lifestyle. Thus the workshop is not only the place where a skill is learned but also a workshop of the heart!
Jericho Store
Our store was opened as a result of our need to display and sell the products that are made in our workshops. The women make a variety of fine linens for the home as well as hand-carved frames. Products are also sold through supporting churches in the United States.
Jericho Kid's Ministry
In May of 2003, Jericho Kid's Ministry was birthed to provide childcare and a solid Christian education for the children of the women of Jericho.
The children are loved, fed and educated in an atmosphere of Christian love and caring while their mothers are in the workshop. Jericho Kid's Ministry is comprised of a bilingual preschool and elementary school
as well as scholarships for higher education and now includes Jericho Christian Faith High School.
Jericho House
The new Jericho House in Tegucigalpa was dedicated to God in November of 2005. The Jericho family had been praying for sometime for their "own home" because they had outgrown their rented offices downtown. God clearly answered that prayer in June of 2005 by providing a three story home and then provided for the remodeling of the building to fit the needs of their ministry. The new center offers a safer neighborhood, expanded classrooms with a playground for the children, a larger workshop and store, and a future coffee shop/bakery and beauty shop. Please join Jericho in praying God's blessing on all who enter this new facility and that God will be glorified in all that is accomplished here.
Jericho San Pedro Sula
Over a year ago a Korean factory owner named Daniel in San Pedro Sula began to sense a burden for the many women on the streets in the city of San Pedro Sula, a large city four hours North of Tegucigalpa. He had heard of Hae Young Keoun, a Korean missionary who has been with Jericho for almost 8 years. He visited Jericho and knew that he wanted to start something similar in San Pedro. God heard his prayer and Hae Young was able to put him in contact with Rosario de Jerezano who had a huge impact on Betsy's spiritual formation when she lived on the North Coast of Honduras. Rosario now meets weekly with women who have expressed a desire for freedom and makes home visits to these diamonds in the rough. Please pray for this new ministry as it grows by the power of Christ.
Villa Jericho
A work in progress, the Jericho Villa is a major expansion of Jericho Ministries. For years, Betsy and her staff have been praying about an expanded vision for the ministry. Although Jericho's original downtown location was the right place to reach out to women trapped in prostitution, it was not an ideal location for ministering to women who were newly rescued from the streets; at night they would go home to the same environment from which they came and to great temptations to return to the old life they knew. The Jericho Villa site is located on 100 acres in a mountainous region southeast of Tegucigalpa on the road to Nicaragua. Once construction is completed, women rescued from the streets will spend up to one year at the Villa, living with their children in modest homes. They will be disciplined by rescued women strong in their faith and taught skills such as sewing, baking, cosmetology, and carpentry. At the end of the year, Jericho will help them find a home back in the city where they can continue at the new Jericho House or find employment using their new skills. Another facet of the vision for the Jericho land is to provide a retreat center for missionaries and church groups so that they, too, can enjoy drawing closer to God in this beautiful setting.
